Born: 14 June, 1926, in Cambridge. Died: Overnight 29/30 December, 2014, in Newtonmore, aged 88.
Allan Garraway was one of the giants of railway preservation, an expert who was not merely a railway enthusiast but an enthusiastic railwayman, a subtle but a vital distinction.
Internationally renowned in his field, he ran the world's oldest operational railway company, an enterprise that would not exist today but for his contribution and tenacity.
For almost 30 years he managed the historic Ffestiniog Railway Company in Wales, which he had been determined to reinvent, and in retirement was a director of the spectacular Strathspey Railway in the Highlands, an area he had known as a schoolboy.

The Strathspey Steam Railway is set to remain on track in its bid to re-connect Aviemore and Grantown by loco.
Members of the Cairngorms National Park Authority's planning committee are being recommended to approve the latest work to extend the railway towards Grantown.
The proposal is to relay track from the River Dulnain crossing for around 1.7 kilometres leading east past Ballintomb Farm to Lower Gaich Farm, in the Dulnain Bridge area.

A section of Strathspey railway line which was axed as part of the notorious Beeching cuts has now re-opened to rail passengers for the first time in nearly 60 years.
The line was officially closed on October 18, 1956, but a rail service has just restarted taking passengers from beyond the current terminus at Broomhill Station and on for a further three-quarters of a mile towards Grantown.
The diesel engine stopped short of crossing the recently installed bridge spanning the River Dulnain on the first outing on Wednesday.
A planning application for laying track across the bridge was recently called in by the Cairngorms National Parks planning committee.

Railway enthusiasts have hired a powerful crane to lift the lower sections of a new bridge into place across a river in the Highlands.

A major step in the return of steam engines to Grantown is set to start soon as part of a project costing more than £30,000.
A steel bridge structure which used to cross Merry Street in Motherwell and was donated by Network Rail in 2008 will be installed over the River Dulnain.
A massive rail-borne Kirow 1200 crane, operated by Colas Rail, is coming north to lift the bridge beams into position in mid-February.
Members of 39 Engineer Regiment, based at Kinloss Barracks, will assist with later bridge works.

What was once the 'highest railway station in Britain' has been taken apart and will be rebuilt at the site of a music festival.
The wooden Victorian building was built at about 1,400ft at Dalnaspidal and was opened in 1864.
In the 1970s it was taken down and rebuilt in Aviemore and had been in the care of Strathspey Steam Railway.
After becoming surplus to requirements, it has been moved to Inshriach, home of the Insider Festival.

Railway enthusiasts are to mark the 150th anniversary of the opening of a line from Perth to Inverness.
Strathspey Steam Railway plans to recreate part of a free celebratory train journey held in 1863 between Aviemore and Grantown-on-Spey.
Grantown cannot be reached by train today, but on 3 August's anniversary a steam locomotive will pull a train from Aviemore as far as Broomhill.
Passengers wearing Victorian clothing will travel free.

Nearly eight years after the re-opening of the original Highland Main line between Boat of Garten and Broomhill and eighteen months after reaching the River Dulnain, the Strathspey Railway Charitable Trust launched the 'Rails to Grantown' appeal at Broomhill Station, near Dulnain Bridge yesterday. Local and national politicians as well as leaders of the many organisations that are giving support to the project attended. The intention of the appeal is to raise at least £182,000 in the current year, part of the estimated £5M it will cost to restore a train service to Grantown-on-Spey.
Braeriach, a 0-6-0 tank locomotive formerly on the Weymss Private Railway, pulling the LMS Inspection Officers Saloon heralded the launch of the appeal event at noon. During the afternoon, this train took guests down some of the new track already laid towards Grantown. [With thanks to Sue Davies]

The Strathspey Railway has re-opened the line between Boat of Garten and Broomhill closed to passengers on 18/10/1965. This brings the Strathspey Railway's intention to re-open the line between Aviemore and Grantown closer to completion leaving only the Broomhill to Grantown section which involves a tricky crossing of the A95(T).
